RASCAL SRS (S tunt, R acing, S peed )

AN ALL NEW CONTROL LINE COMPETITION
FROM PETERBOROUGH MODEL FLYING CLUB
COMMENCING IN 2010- JUST FOR FUN!


In the mid 1980's and through to 1998 the Peterborough MFC Cabbage Patch Nats. became a catalyst for mixing new C/L events with established ones. When the Cabbage Patch ceased innovation also took a dive and all that is left from those heady days is Peacemaker Stunt which itself is now in severe decline. The PMFC 60 years control line celebration in 2005 introduced Weatherman Speed for the 2006 season and with the help of Dick Roberts (who produced detailed rules) has become a hugely successful event in just 4 years. With existing C/L competitions set up into distinct categories it is inevitable that the separate fraternities of Stunt, Racing and Speed tend to operate within their particular main interest groups. We know from past success that if an event can be interesting enough it is possible to attract modellers from other disciplines to dip their toes into something different provided the challenge is interesting and does not take up too much time nor is expensive. So our thinking was driven by what could be done to create a new fun class that the majority of clubs with control line members would be able to take part in which would break the mould and create a really popular new competition without taking too much time and money away from dedicated specialised control line pursuits.

We came up with the following main aims:-

a)    Create a new idea which does not compromise existing control line competitions

b)    Select a suitable model which will interest a wide range of aeromodellers and must be attractive, simple and inexpensive.

c)    Enable a team of up to three members embrace with one model and engine combination stunt, racing and speed competitions.  Any plain or ball race engine up to 1.5cc may be used.

d)    Arrange for sponsorship to cover all prizes for the 2010 season.

e)    Organise at least three competitions in 2010, the first to be held under the SAM 35 banner at Barkston May Bank Holiday Nats, 29th/31st May.  The second at the SAM35 Gala at Old Warden on 26th/27th June and the third planned for the Old Warden Festival of Flight 11th/12th September. 

After much enjoyment sifting through over 100 designs we have selected Ron Moulton’s "RASCAL" Published in Aeromodeller in May 1957 Plan Number CL 660 which is widely available from all the plan banks. With a wingspan of 26",engines up to 1.5cc, attractive design features, easy to build and the ability to fly the vintage stunt schedule, look like a team racer and certainly put on a turn of speed, Ron’s model fits the bill to perfection!

So what about the rules?

1)    Model to be built as per Aeromodeller Plan May 1957, BMFA number to be clearly visible on outside wing. Outstanding models will be eligible for a Concours prize at each competition.

2)    Up to a maximum of 3 team members who can select respective roles i.e. one member could fly the stunt schedule, one could specialise in engine starting and pitting, while the third may wish to pilot in racing and speed. ANY combination can be agreed by the respective team members. Each team member must be named for the competition entry sheets along with their respective BMFA numbers. In this competition the pilot does not have to start the motor in the stunt section.

3) Model to fly on 45' lines of .012 diameter from centreline of model to centreline of handle for all three sections of the competition. Pull test of model weight x 10 for every entrant.

3a)    It is not compulsory to fly all three sections of the competition but obviously any team flying less than the three elements will earn fewer points.

4)    Only one motor per model for all three elements of the competition.

5)    Teams are allowed multiple entries but only one motor per model as in (4) above.

6)    Tanks may be increased in size to allow the SAM35 Vintage Schedule be flown as a single flight.

7) Cut-outs may be fitted for the Team Race element (they will require easy detachment from the elevator horn for the stunt section and some means of clipping to the fuselage when not in use).  Cut-outs may be obtained from Stuart Robinson, 2 Brooklyn Street, Utley, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD20 6DU.

8)    Any commercial propeller may be used.  Teams may change props. for the different elements of the competition.

9)    As it is anticipated entrants may well be flying in other C/L events at the meeting dates published, one flight per element will be flown.  At the Contest Director’s discretion this may be increased to two flights per element (Stunt, T/R, Speed) where the situation allows.

10)    The Old Time (SAM 35) Vintage Stunt Schedule to be flown. Maximum of 8 minutes from entering the circle to exit allowed. 60 secs. to start motor from signal to judge. One flight per competitor.  Pilot does not have to start motor.


11)    Team Race Heats to be 80 laps with 2 pit stops flown 2 up. One heat per team per competition. Fastest three teams go through to final.  If two pit stops are not done within 80 laps. timing will continue until two stops plus one lap have been completed.

12)    Final 160 laps with minimum of 3 stops.

SPEED COMPETITION ELEMENT

 1)    Model timed from standing ROG start.

2)    10 laps in total.

3)    Handle on chest from commencement of lap 2.

4)    Whipping will mean instant disqualification no warning given.

5)    One attempt per competitor.

6)    Maximum time allowed per competitor from entering the circle with lines attached is 4 minutes. Over 4 minutes no score.

Final placings will be determined by adding the scores achieved in each of the three competitions to arrive at final totals.

There will be officials to run the three respective parts of the competition and an overall contest director responsible for the total scores and ensuring all rules are understood and operated.

PRIZES

For the first season prizes will be as follows:-

1)    Trophies and wine for the 1st, 2nd &3rd places at each competition (assuming 3 members per team there will be trophies and wine for each member).

2)    Wine for the Concours winner at each competition.

3)    Certificates from 4th to 9th place for each team member

4)    At the 3rd meeting of 2010 the team achieving the highest points score over the 3 competitions will each receive £50 to a maximum of £150.Plus wine & certificates as before.
